The name of Kharagpur is from the old temple present in Kharagpur which has the presiding deity as Shiva named as Khargeshwar. It was set up by King Kharag Singh pal, hence the name of the temple was initiated. Pandavas spent some period of time here, whereby it is closely associated to the period of Mahabharata. It was ruled also by Hijli kingdom too, this area was a small village, did surround by forests. It was a province till 1886.
